Swollen Gill Disease

Symptoms

  • Swollen gills are usually caused by ammonia poisoning in water

  • Fish will scratch against objects and appear listless.

  • A grayish film may form on the body from low oxygen retention

  • Rapid breathing in fish; accompanied by gasping at the surface of the water,

  • Gills undergo severe damage, leading to suffocation and death

Organic treatment of fish

  1. Immediately do a 75% water change (use de-chlorinated water)

  2. Add extra air stones temporarily to the tank

  3. Let the temperature drop to 72 degrees

  4. If gills are too damaged the fish may die

Medicinal treatment of fish

  1. Immediately treat the entire tank with full dose Ark BioRite Total Water Conditioner this will neutralize ammonia instantly

  2. Do a 50% water change (use de-chlorinated water

  3. Add extra air stones temporarily to the tank

  4. Dose tank with Ark BioRite Stress Relief to aid fish in the repair of slime coat and gill lining
